Weight Loss Genetics: Turning Carbs Into Fat

Believe it or not scientists have determined the gene which is linked to the ability of the liver to turn carbohydrates into fat. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley bred mice without the gene can stay lean even when given the same equivalent carbs as those in the control group.

This interesting weight loss research on the DNA-PK gene will help shed light on carbohydrates metabolism and its contribution to obesity. Since the study has had some success on mice and humans have the same genes, researchers are hoping to have the same success on humans.

But before you blame your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, look at your own lifestyle and evaluate your eating habits. Are you eating healthy? It doesn’t help to blame your genes if you want to lose those unwanted pounds. You have to take responsibility of your actions and start losing weight now!

Take a look at this Top 3 Weight Loss Tips FREE report to learn the safe and effective way of losing weight.

Teen Weight Loss: Starting Young At Home

Teen Weight Loss: Starting Young At Home

If obesity is a concern to adults, this is more so in the case of overweight and obese teens. An alarming 25% of children in the US are overweight or at risk of being overweight, and this number is steadily increasing every year. Today, this translates to more than 12.3 children and teens who weight more than their ideal weight and we are put in a serious position of evaluating and reconsidering of eating habits and lifestyle.

Being overweight or obese for teens has severe repercussions, on health, emotional and social aspects of their lives. They need to deal with emotional abuse, social isolation, bullying and teasing, and other psychosocial behaviors everyday from other people. Weight problems affect one’s self-esteem, popularity and the ability to get dates – these are issues which are important in a teenager’s life.

These issues drive home the need to start making healthier food choices and a more active lifestyle – the perfect combination to a safe and effective weight loss. It is not recommended to resort to diets unless recommended and supervised by a health professional and this is usually for people who are severely obese. Any weight loss diet which requires a drastic reduction in calorie intake is considered unhealthy and more likely, dangerous as well. If there is one thing common to all effective and safe weight loss and weight maintenance program is that there is no easy and quick way of losing those excess pounds. You have to eat right, exercise regularly, and make healthy lifestyle decisions.

Once a teenager has made the decision and commitment to lose weight for real, everyone should help out and be supportive. If it’s frustrating for an adult to embark on a weight loss journey and come up with discouraging results, this is a heart-breaking situation for a teenager so that parents, close friends even teachers need to be understanding and supportive of the emotional trauma he or she is experiencing.

One way to do this is to have a weight loss-friendly pantry and to stack the fridge with healthy stuff. It would also help to impose TV hours and computer hours. There have been studies linking TV hours and weight gain due to the big possibility of mindless eating and the time is spent in front of the TV or computer rather than on physical activities. You should also make weight loss and healthy lifestyle a family affair since this decision will benefit everyone. It would also be easier for someone who is on a weight loss diet if his or her family are showing their support and not alienating or isolating him of her from the rest of the family.

The family has been proven to have a huge impact on one’s eating habits and therefore, the family is a vital aspect of weight loss. Studies have shown that parents who live healthy pass on this health conscious mindset to their children. Parents should be involved in helping their kids achieve a safe weight loss and a long term effective weight maintenance program.

Again, remember that weight loss is a long process and not one which has a shortcut. So be ready for the long haul and be prepared to overcome some pretty tough challenges along the way because it’s going to be one heck of a journey. And for the parents, be there for your kids, it’s going to make a big difference.

Alli: The New Weight Loss Wonder Drug?

Alli: The New Weight Loss Wonder Drug?

With the success of Xenical (orlistat) reaching unique success both in clinical trials and in actual practice, many overweight and obese individuals can now effectively lose weight especially when it is used in conjunction with a sound diet plan and regular exercise. However, Xenical is obtained only by prescription and that means a visit to a physician or a registered dietician. Not everyone is comfortable discussing their weight problems with another and this where Alli comes in.

Alli, pronounced the same way as “ally”, is everything like Xenical except in their dosage and the mode of purchase. Xenical contains 120 milligrams of orlistat whereas Alli only has half of it at 60 milligrams. Xenical can be purchased only when you have a doctor’s written prescription for the weight loss pill while Alli can be bought over the counter of your local drugstore.

Alli works by blocking the fat absorbed by digestion. And this can result to some uncomfortable bowel movements, soft stools, and oily discharge. Many a friendly advice has been plentiful – no use it during a special occasion, say a wedding or maybe a first date.

Experts also advice those who plan to take Alli to compensate it by taking vitamin supplements. And again, a good weight loss diet and regular physical exercise must be emphasized if you want the best results for your weight loss program. As is always my advice, seek professional advice with a health practitioner; it is better to be safe than sorry. We are talking about your health and your life here.

Have you ever heard of negative calorie foods? Did you know they are perfect for your weight loss?

Let me tell you just how…

But let’s be clear on one thing – there is no food which has negative calorie…not until you eat them. Negative calorie foods are those which need more calories to digest them than the number of calories they actually contain.

A slice of your favorite chocolate cake can have as much as 400-500 calories but may take only 150 calories to digest. That means you have 250-350 excess calories which is then translated into stored body fat.

However, a slice of an apple only has 20 calories and may use up the same number of calories (150 calories) to digest it. You have a 130 calorie deficit! Guess where you get the needed calories for digesting the apple? That’s right! You get it from your stored body fat.

Simply put, negative calorie foods are eating to lose weight.

But not all foods have this wonderful characteristic, that much we know, so here’s a short list of negative calorie foods you just have to include in your shopping list to the local farmer’s market this weekend:

1. Asparagus
2. Apricot
3. Plum
4. Beet
5. Broccoli
6. Green cabbage
7. Carrot
8. Cauliflower
9. Celery root
10. Cucumber
11. Green beans
12. Guava

In a study by Dr. Dean Ornish, a famous doctor whose accomplishments in the medical field is widely recognized, the results were very interesting. Without any calorie intake restrictions or special weight loss exercise, there was a significant reduction in the weights of the patients in the study. The diet is vegetarian in nature with many fruits and vegetables.

Eating more fruits and vegetables is good for you, more than you know. They are not only rich in the nutrients your body needs; nutrients including vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, antioxidants, and fiber.

Fruits and vegetables can also help you lose weight and all you have to do is choose the right foods, cut down on the fats, and load up on fruits and vegetables.
