Weight Loss: Calories Are What Counts

In the latest study led by the Harvard School of Public Health, reveals that the type of diet you are on doesn’t really matter as long as you burn more calories than you take in. This is the sure way to lose weight.

There are so many weight loss diets but they are not created equal. Most of us think being healthy means fitting nicely in your bathing suit but it is more than that. Being healthy means having healthy organs, good levels of sugar and cholesterol in the blood, and a cardiovascular system in good shape.

Most fad diets make losing weight to fast and fail to bring you long term results you can live with.
The Harvard study has been meticulous and as scientifically sound as possible in approaching the weight loss and diets issue. For two years, a group of 200 subjects were placed on different diets – from high-carb and low-fat to low-carb and high-fat diets.

Proteins, carbohydrates, and fats are very important macronutrients especially as energy sources of the body. In the study, however, the type of diet was found to be insignificant because regardless of the type of the diet the subjects were on, they lost the same amount of weight.

The key to weight loss is not the type of diet you are on but rather the amount of calories you consume versus the number of calories you burn. You must create a deficit between your input and out put of calories to see significant changes in your weight.

For weight loss, maintenance and general well-being, the best diet is to have one which is low in fat (especially saturated fats) and high in complex carbohydrates. Remember that weight loss takes time and there’s no easy way to go about it. Just stick to eating less calories than you used and to burn more of your stored calories.

There are basically two kinds of fats -the good and the bad.
Sounds rather simple right?
Nuts have been underrated for quite some time because of the misinformation created by the low-fat trend and weight loss diets.
I bet you haven’t had a bag of peanuts in quite some time! In studies to date however, nuts have been found to be quite healthy contrary to the old superstition we all came to believe.
Good fats are those you get from nuts and that certainly include peanuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans, and macadamia nuts.
Good fats are the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated forms. These kinds of fats are healthier and are found in various sources of protein, which provide necessary minerals and other nutrients as well.
Sounds good doesn’t it?
But what about those bad fats?
Stay away from French fries and other processed foods! They are excellent sources of your dreaded bad fats.
Saturated and trans fats are unhealthy and will absolutely cause you to gain extra pounds if you don’t watch what you eat. Always read the labels of the foods you buy. It pays to be informed, not just on your wallet but more clearly on the scale.
